Back to school is closer than you think in Amarillo. Only a little over a week before Amarillo and Canyon head back to the classrooms, and you may be panicking a bit if you haven't done your school supply shopping yet.

Now, most major retailers have overstock of the main school supplies, so you're not completely out of luck on finding everything you need. There are some other outlets though to get your kiddos ready for school.

One thing the panhandle has always been really good about are these events that hand out free school supplies and other things the kids need as they head back to the classroom, and this year is no different. There are several events that are going to be happening this weekend, and Amarillo Public Health will be on hand at all these events to provide needed immunizations for those without health insurance or Medicaid.

HILLSIDE CHRISTIAN CHURCH BLOCK PARTY

Happening at their campus on N. Grand, Hillside Christian Church is doing a big block party that is free to attend, and they're going to get your kiddos feet hooked up. At the block party, you'll be able to purchase shoes for only $5, or you can get them for free by bringing five cans of food.

Now, there is a limit as to how many pairs of shoes you can get, and that limit is five pairs, but that should get all your kiddos hooked up for the school year. The event will happen August 10th from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm.

BACK 2 SCHOOL BARRIO BASH & HORSESHOE TOURNAMENT

This event returns for the sixth year in a row, and is one of the best in Amarillo. The Back 2 School Barrio Bash & Horseshoe Tournament will be happening at El Alamo Park on August 11th and will be loaded up for the kiddos.

They'll be able to receive a backpack stocked with school supplies, plus they'll be able to get a free haircut so they're ready for that first day back. There will also be free hamburgers and hot dogs at the event.

BACK TO SCHOOL CHILDREN'S VACCINES & PHYSICALS

Happening on August 10th at the Heal The City Free Clinic, 609. S. Carolina St., you'll be able to get the kids all caught up on their vaccines as well as get the older ones physicals they'll need if they are participating in sports.

This event is for those that don't carry health insurance, and aren't on Medicaid or CMP. Lunch will also be provided for those who make it there.
