This year for Thanksgiving, there will be a Thanksgiving Day dinner that is open to the community. It will be held at the Amarillo Civic Center. It is the Salvation Army's 2020 Amarillo Community Thanksgiving Fellowship Lunch.

The Salvation Army is planning the community Thanksgiving meal, along with help from the City of Amarillo, the Guyon Saunders Resource Center, and Amarillo Sod Poodles. It will be held Thanksgiving Day at the Civic Center from 11 AM until 1 PM.

It is open to the public. The menu is a classic Thanksgiving meal. Tyson Foods Amarillo is donating the Turkeys.

In a press release, Salvation Army Major Ernest Hull said that this is a great opportunity for organizations to come to together to help as many people as they can. He's also hoping that this becomes an annual event.

It is hard to believe that Thanksgiving is only two weeks away. This Thanksgiving is going to be one I think many of us will remember very well, for a very long time.

At first I wondered about the current rise in cases and how that is going to potentially affect the event. I also thought about those who are trying to figure out if they're even going to be able have a Thanksgiving dinner this year.

On more than one occasion I've had to put off seeing family members of mine this year because of Covid-19. I doubt I see them for Thanksgiving.

My family has also experienced losing some of those we love this year.

I'm lucky I have my wife, kids, and dogs to spend Thanksgiving Day with. For those in our community without anyone to spend the holiday with, this is at least a way to feel connected to others.

Even if it requires wearing a mask and maintaining social distance.
