It appears the most wonderful time of the season has arrived. The colder weather is moving out, with random days of chilly still, the leaves are starting to grow, and the flowers are beginning to bloom.

That can mean only one thing when it comes to Amarillo and Texas as a whole.

Yup, allergy season is officially underway. Mine were doing just fine, then I went up to Elk City, OK. for one of my son's baseball tournaments. It was there that I started getting itchy eyes, one of the worst allergy symptoms in my opinion.

I was hoping it was relegated to there since I was around some dead grass and a bit of a different climate. I got back to Amarillo, and they didn't go away. Sure, my eyes weren't itchy anymore, but now I'm stuck with that allergy stuffy nose, and random sneezing bouts.

Looks like it's time for us to start prepping for those allergies, and there are ways to make them a little easier to deal with.

Springtime in Texas typically brings crazy pollen. The trees are starting to grow back their leaves, with oak trees being one of the worst offenders of it. Other trees you may want to avoid are ash, pecan, elm, and cottonwood. Basically, just stay away from trees.

While I recognize that's probably not the easiest thing to do, there ARE some things you can do to help lessen the symptoms of those allergies. Let's take a look at what you can do.

WET-VACUUM YOUR CARPETS

If you've got carpeting in your residence, one thing you can do is grab a steam cleaner and wet-vacuum those carpets. Seems a bit silly on the surface, but allergens have a tendency to get stuck in the fibers of the carpet and can hang around for a long time. If you wet-vacuum them, you'll do a much better job of pulling those allergens out.

OVER-THE-COUNTER MEDS

This seems like the simplest option, right? We take our pill of choice, whether it be Claritin, Benadryl, or your pill of choice. That should provide you with some relatively instant relief. The downside to the pills is you have to keep taking them every 12 or 24 hours, and those things can get expensive. Why spend $15-20 per box of pills every 10 or so days? That will rack up quickly.

FLUSH NASAL CAVITIES

This method is typically pretty effective. Once those allergens get inside your nasal cavities, they have a tendency to just stick in there and not want to go anywhere. Remember, your nasal cavities are typically a wet and warm place for them to settle in. Rather than constantly be on the hunt for a tissue, grab a Neti Pot, mix up the warm saline solution, and flush out your nasal cavities. You'll feel like a brand new person.

Hang in there my allergy friends, we'll get through this together!
