As the year is just flying by, it's hard to imagine that here we are in September in Amarillo. September means that we are getting close to fall, and one of the first things we think about autumn is the fair.

All of the rides and all of the food. One of the things about the fair that I always had on my must-have list is the stuffed sopapillas from the St. Matthew's booth. That became a regular requirement every time I headed through those gates.

The End of an Amarillo Fair Tradition

Then, when the pandemic hit in 2020, that was the end of their booth at the Tri-State Fair. So you would think that meant the end of those great sopapillas in Amarillo. Luckily, even though the trip to the fair leaves us without those great sopapillas, all hope is not lost.

St. Matthew's Church realized how much we love those and has made sure we had a day or two each year to celebrate the great sopapillas that they used to sell for so many years at the Tri-State Fair.

How Sopapillas Became a Church Fundraiser

They decided to turn their sopapillas into a fundraiser for the church a few times a year at the church's location of 1631 S Roberts. The best news is that this year, you can have this great fair food before the fair even gets here. That is a reason to celebrate.

When and Where to Get Sopapillas This Weekend

This Saturday is the big day in Amarillo. If you have been missing this great staple out at the fair then make sure you head to St. Matthew's from 11:30 am - 1:30 pm. It's a full meal. Not only will you get a delicious stuffed sopapilla, but what meal would be complete without the rice and beans, too?

So, save your appetite and make sure you head to St. Matthew's Church this Saturday. Your stomach will thank you.
