For those that don't know, February is Black History Month.

However, that doesn't mean February should be the only month we pay attention to it and support Black owned businesses.

We have some GREAT businesses in Amarillo that deserve our support. If you've never checked out some of these places, February is a great time to start. You never know, you may just find a new favorite.

THE FAMILY SOULFOOD RESTAURANT

If you're looking for that home cookin', down home kinda vibe for dinner, this is your spot. The Family Soulfood Restaurant is one of the best places in Amarillo to get food...period.

The menu is super diverse, and has a little something for everyone's taste buds. You'll find fried catfish, porkchops, bacon cheeseburgers, chicken wings, some killer mac & cheese and fried okra just to name a few things.

Check out their Facebook page and make it your next meal. I promise you won't be disappointed.

AUSTIN JOHNSON'S ACADEMY OF HOOPS

Got a younger baller in your life? Then this is the penultimate place to hone their skills. Austin Johnson played professionally overseas for 5+ years, but felt a calling to come home to Amarillo and give back to the community. How can you NOT want to support someone like that?

Academy of Hoops offers elite training, camps and club teams for those elite athletes. The program has sent numerous kids off to play college ball, some of them playing D-1 with schools like Texas Tech, UTA and Colorado State.

DUNN TEEZ' N THINGS

This is my kind of place right here. If you're looking for shirts or hoodies, they've got a really nice collection of them inside the store. Men's and women's clothes and stuff to fit anyone's budget makes this a go-to place when doing your shopping.

If you're looking for custom stickers and car decals for your business or sports team, they can even do that for you. It's a one stop shop when it comes to that kind of stuff, and I'll be looking at using them when it comes to needing these for my kids baseball teams.

Check out their website here.

COMBS AND CUTS

Speaking from experience, this is the best place in Amarillo to get your haircut. We took both our boys here for their back to school haircuts and they did the best job on their hair that I've ever seen.

My kids have very different hair styles. One is growing it out, the other likes it nice and tight but stylish. My oldest was doing the whole one side shaved, other side long look when we went in, but he started to let that shaved side grow out. He said he wanted it to all be one length. We told his barber what he wanted, and he nailed it. My youngest got the tightest cut he's ever had with lines and everything. Nailed it.

IN THIS MOMENT

Looking for a venue to have an anniversary party or wedding? In This Moment is a place you need to check out. Located on Polk near The Barfield, this has that historic charm with a modern touch you want.

The backdrops and lighting can be tailored to your needs and make any event beautiful. They also hold events that you can attend that aren't private. They hold a Valentines event every year that I hear is one heck of a good time.

You can check em out here.

JP3 FOTOS

If you're looking for those family pictures, senior portraits or team photos then you need to call JP3 Fotos.

Their Facebook page shows plenty of samples of the work they've done, and it's pretty impressive.

They've shot for high school teams in the area and they're some of the most creative pictures I've ever seen. Normally you see them in their uniforms, but they opt for a different look and it's so relatable. Check them out!

These are just a few of the great Black owned businesses here in Amarillo. You can find a more comprehensive list of places to check out here.
