Life skills are a very important thing that I think kids in the Amarillo area end up missing out on. We learn all about how to do math. We learn formulas. We learn about the history of our great country. We end up growing up and moving out and sometimes do not know the basics of life.

Unless we spend time with our parents in the kitchen, we have no idea how to cook. Unless someone takes us outside and teaches us basic car maintenance, we are set up to be taken to a shop. Unless we learn some basic sewing, we will count on others for an easy stitch job.

That is one of the big differences between when I went to school and when my daughter did. I took a Home Economics class in school, but she didn't have the option. I learned how to sew and the valuable lesson that a clove of garlic is not a whole bulb of garlic. There is a difference. That is something that sticks with me to this day. You make that mistake as a group once, and you remember.

Luckily the Canyon Library is offering those type of classes so that we don't have clueless kids heading out on their own.

This needs to happen in every community. Yes, parents can jump in and teach, too, but sometimes, the kids learn better from others. My daughter was never interested in learning to cook until it was too late. Trust me, I tried. She is learning now.

So take that route of getting your kids out there and learning. They will have fun while learning many new skills. Those skills will definitely pay off in the long run.
