Vanishing Art: Amarillo Murals Slowly Disappearing. Why?
I have loved watching the artwork pop up all over Amarillo. I love seeing all of the murals that first popping up in Downtown Amarillo. Then you started seeing them all over the city.
That splash of color that brings an otherwise drab building to life. It is great to see. Recently there have been some murals disappearing. One might wonder why they are going away. One disappearing mural really did make me wonder this. It hit me hard when I realized it was gone.
It was the mural of Lloyd. If you followed the story Lloyd was a homeless man in Amarillo that was killed while he was standing in his place at I40 and Georgia. There was a mural made in his honor after his death.
Just that small section made me smile a bit to see his life was being remembered. Until all of a sudden it was gone. I heard about it. I had to go and see. Was it really missing? Why?
Yep it was gone. It's a blank canvas again. That stung a little bit. So we got to talking at work and I was told that is not the only one gone. The Yellow Girl Mural is also gone. Not to be found anywhere. It is also a blank canvas again. Why?
My guess is because Hoodoo Mural Festival is happening soon. I saw in a press release that national artists will arrive this week to begin painting and producing their murals for the Hoodoo Mural Festival that is going to be held on Sept. 30 at 3 p.m. in downtown Amarillo.
So they needed spaces to paint. I'm just surprised that there are not other buildings in downtown Amarillo wanting some beauty added to it. Maybe they are running out of places. I really don't know. I can't wait to see what they come up with for these murals.
