If you look towards downtown Amarillo you can gaze at the tall skyscraper buildings in our skyline. You might not think that Amarillo doesn't have much to show but we really do. Sure, we are not a Dallas-like city. We never really wanted to be.

We have a few tall buildings, and we are happy with that. Will we ever add to our city? Will we ever gain another skyscraper-like building? My guess would be no.

Amarillo has the tallest skyscraper in our city being the FirstBank Southwest Tower, formerly The Chase Tower. It was built in 1971 and sits at 374 feet with thirty-one floors. That was officially the last skyscraper added to our city.

The first one, The Fisk Medical Arts Building, was built around 1927. It now housed the Courtyard by Marriot hotel. It is only 152 feet and has twelve floors. There are other buildings that tower over downtown Amarillo.

We have the likes of the Santa Fe Building and the Amarillo National Bank Building. So will Amarillo ever see another skyscraper added anywhere in the city. The answer is probably not.

Why is that? Buildings like that are built because we need to have space for a lot of people in a small area. That is why a lot of big cities build up to make room for the growth of business in a bustling area.

That is not to say that Amarillo is not growing. We, of course are,, our city is just building out. We have a lot of space between Amarillo and Canyon. We have room to grow outwards and not upwards.

So the buildings we have will probably be the only tall skyscrapers we will see in our city. That is fine though because I think our city is quite proud of what we have.

The old Santa Fe depot is one of the oldest buildings in Amarillo. Located at 401 S. Grant, the historic depot has sat empty for several decades. The depot is in remarkably good condition for such a long stretch of vacancy, and the City of Amarillo has plans to bring the station back to life.

In the meantime....enjoy this rare look behind the locked doors of the old Santa Fe depot.
