This week we reported that Xcel Energy was asking for a 14% increase on our electric bills, unfortunately that wasn't the scam.  There is a new phone scam making the rounds involving your energy bill.

Xcel Energy has reported that scammers are calling customers and posing as customer agents.  Some of those calls even use an Xcel Engery phone number due to spoofing, so it appears that the call is coming from Xcel Energy.  The scammer is telling the customers that someone from Xcel Energy is on their way to their home or business to disconnect power due to a past due bill and the only way to stop this is for the customer to pay the bill over the phone.  The only option to pay is a prepaid debit card.

The scammers will use anything to make the call sound legitimate.

Xcel wants to remind customers, that if your power is going to be disconnected you will first receive a disconnect notice in the mail before they send a service person to disconnect.

If you receive one of these calls, hang up and call Xcel at  1-800-895-4999 to double check the status of your bill or go online and check your account.

Xcel offers several options to pay your bill, you can do it the traditional way of mailing in a check or money order, you can go online and sign up for their online service and pay your bill online, or you can download the Xcel Energy Mobile App and pay through the app.

Be aware of people trying to scam you out of your money.  Always question strange phone calls, if it doesn't seem right, it probably isn't.
