Amarillo Memories – How Georgia Street Has Changed Over the Years
Oh, the memories we have when we drive up and down any given street here in Amarillo. It's great to see the changes over the years. We are making a lot of progress. Seeing all the businesses that have come and gone.
The Georgia Street area is really my area. My hood I guess you can call it. I have lived in the area as far back as I can remember. I briefly lived in an apartment on 34th and Coulter. I lived near Amarillo College. My first home was near Sam's on Ross.
Since I moved into Amarillo most of my homes have been right off of Georgia Street. So I know the area very well. I remember when pretty much all of the car dealerships were on Georgia Street. If you wanted a car that is the only street you needed. That is not the case anymore.
Georgia Street has everything. We used to have a Kmart, but now there is Walmart. We used to have Homeland but now the groceries are wheeled out to our car from Market Street.
We not only had Blockbuster but we had Hastings. We had a two-story Hastings before it was moved across the street and finally closed. We used to have a place to get our western wear. Remember when Boots n Jeans was on Georgia?
We used to have a Burger King that changed to a Hoagies and finally settled on Roasters. We used to not have so many coffee places on one street. Now we have choices. Georgia Street has Roasters, Starbucks, and Scooters. I say that is making progress. Choices.
It's fun to drive up and down a main street in Amarillo and reminisce about how much it has changed. Georgia Street has certainly had it's fair share of changes.
