I am already working on filling up my calendar for stuff to do in September. I mean here we are on the first day. We can't let this month slip. There will be plenty of stuff to do.

We can make sure we start filling up those weekends with this event in Borger. Not a far drive for some great food and fun. Plus you will also be able to help out United Way. How about some great barbecue? Well of course that will be on the menu. There will be a cookoff to award the best food. So only the best will be served.

That is not all. There will be a really cool car show for the family to enjoy as well. Your ticket to the barbecue cook off will include the car show admission too. Plus there are fun activities planned for the kiddos.

They will be able to take a train ride and try their hand at archery. They will also be able to learn about fire safety by taking a tour of the fire safety trailer. Oh and don't forget about the cornhole tournament as well. If you are pretty good you may want to make sure you get signed up. Oh, did I mention there will also be door prizes for you to win?

LOOK: Here are the best lake towns to live in

Many of the included towns jump out at the casual observer as popular summer-rental spots--the Ozarks' Branson, Missouri, or Arizona's Lake Havasu--it might surprise you to dive deeper into some quality-of-life offerings beyond the beach and vacation homes. You'll likely pick up some knowledge from a wide range of Americana: one of the last remaining 1950s-style drive-ins in the Midwest; a Florida town that started as a Civil War veteran retirement area; an island boasting some of the country's top public schools and wealth-earners right in the middle of a lake between Seattle and Bellevue; and even a California town containing much more than Johnny Cash's prison blues.
