Calling All Cowboys: Three Days of Events at the Tri-State Fair Rodeo

Everyone knows that the Tri-State Fair & Rodeo is coming to Amarillo. It kicks off Friday, September 17th. The fair isn't my favorite part though, that honor belongs to the Rodeo and that starts on Thursday, September 23rd and ends Saturday, September 25th. That's three whole days of rowdy roping and riding.

The Calf Scramble

To kick things off is a calf scramble, which starts at 7:15pm each of the three nights the rodeo will run. For those of y'all who are wondering what the heck a calf scramble is: all the youngsters get to catch a calf with their bare hands.

It's super fun to watch, it's like watching a group of kids try and catch a chicken, all that slipping and sliding everywhere. But the 10 fastest calf-snatchers will be awarded a $250 scholarship. It looks like applications are still being accepted until Thursday September 14th and are due at the Tri-state fair office.

PRCA Rodeo

The main event, which is the PRCA Rodeo, starts at 7:30pm all three nights. There will be bareback racing, saddle bronc riding, steer roping, tie down roping, team roping, steer wrestling, and bull riding events. These events will have an estimated pay off of $123,399 and earn winners a spot at the WRCA Rodeo in November. The top paying eventss are team roping with 3,340 dollars for 1st place, bull riding with $2,945 for 1st place and barrel racing with $2,344 for 1st place.

Local Legends/Records

One reason I like to go to this rodeo besides watching is the same reason you go to a Sod Poodle game: you never know who you will see there. Like 3 Time PRCA bareback riding world Champion Will Lowe who is from Canyon or the 2008 PRCA and WNFR tie down roper world champion Stran Smith who is from Childress. Or my favorite Amarillo Native Trevor Brazile who is a 26 time world champion and holds 14 all around cowboy champion titles breaking the record which was previously held by Ty Murray at 7. Trevor along side Patrick Smith also held the fastest team roping record at the tri-state fair and rodeo at 14.2 seconds but was broke the following year by Ty Blasingame and Cody Hintz at 3.9 seconds. But the record I'm most interested to see if it will get broke or not is the bull riding record held by Jim "Razor" Sharp a founding father of PBR at 94 points.
