I grew up wearing a uniform when I went to school in Chicago. My parents thought private school was the way to go in the South Side of Chicago. So along with the safety came the uniforms we had to wear every day.

I hated wearing skirts. I really did. I think that is why I don't wear dresses much now. I remember how happy I was when they added a new uniform for the girls that included getting to wear pants. Victory for me.

So uniforms were a part of my life growing up until we moved to Canyon. Then I had to pick out an outfit each and every day. Yes, wearing a uniform is a pain but it really did have its perks. It took out the having to pick out clothes each day, I guess.

I was scrolling through social media awhile ago when I saw someone ask about school uniforms in Amarillo. I knew that if you went to a private school you would be wearing a uniform. This parent was asking about schools in Amarillo Independent School District.

I thought surely no public Amarillo school required uniforms. Apparently I was wrong. Three schools were mentioned.

  • Tradewind Elementary
  • Emerson Elementary
  • Glenwood Elementary

Really? We had schools with not only a dress code but a uniform? I found that hard to believe but I decided to go online and check the school district and this is what I found:

Standardized Dress

The following information is from AISD’s policy on standardized dress. Standardized dress is not as restrictive as a uniform, but students are required to wear clothing that adheres to certain guidelines established by a campus committee.

Schools that currently have a standardized dress code include:

  • Emerson Elementary
  • Glenwood Elementary
  • Tradewind Elementary
  • ***In addition, George Washington Carver Early Childhood Academy and Woodlands Elementary asks that students wear tennis shoes to school every day.

So I was surprised to find out that yes there is a uniform so to speak for some schools in the Amarillo Independent School District. I guess it is true that you learn something new every day.

Ranchotel: The Forgotten Landmark of Old Route 66 in Amarillo, Texas

The Ranchotel, located at 2501 W. 6th St., is a product of Route 66's heyday.

When Americans first began long-distance automotive travel, they typically stayed in hotels or camped beside the road. In response, clever entrepreneurs began to build what were called tourist courts. The Ranchotel is one of these.

It was built in 1940 and until recently, it was considered one of the best preserved examples of Route 66's tourist facilities. It was placed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1995 and was well maintained until 2020.

Even now, in spite of the building's fading beauty, there is still the nostalgic air held by many a historic landmark.
