When I moved from Chicago we landed all the way from there to Canyon, Texas. I was in junior high, that is what they called it way back then. I remember just how different it was from Chicago. Even at a young age there was no denying it.

As I got older the one thing I remembered was how you could not get alcohol in that city. Oh, how the Buffalo Chip flourished as being the closest place to town to stop. It's crazy how Canyon has changed over the years.

Not only beer and wine but everything else is now served in restaurants. You can head to The Lumberyard in Canyon for a great concert and a cold one. Long gone are the days that you either have to grab a six-pack on your way back from Amarillo or head out to 'The Chip' as we called it.

Nothing surprised me more than a recent pilot program I saw come out from West Texas A&M. Something that I thought I would never see in my lifetime. It really goes to show how times are changing and Canyon is catching up with the rest of the world.

How about a Cold One as You Root on the Buffs?

Yes, starting this week that's exactly what you can do. They are testing it out. This week is the final three home dates of the West Texas A&M basketball regular season.

According to West Texas A&M during these games, they are going to serve beer and wine:

Pilot Program Dates
February 20th vs. St. Mary's (5:30 & 7:30 p.m.)
February 22nd vs. St. Edward's (1:00 & 3:00 p.m.)
February 27th vs. Eastern New Mexico (5:30 & 7:30 p.m.)

They are teaming up with Aramark to provide the drinks to those fans 21 and older. They will have to obtain a wristband once they provide proper identification. The alcohol will be served at the west end of the court. You will find it under the scoreboard.

Like most places that serve alcohol, you can only purchase two at a time per person and they will stop serving at the ten-minute mark in the second half. This test pilot is just that, to test the waters or I guess the alcohol and see how it goes.

According to WT here is what they will be serving:

Alcohol Options & Pricing

  • Michelob Ultra (16oz) - $9
  • Modelo (16oz) - $9
  • Bud Light (16oz) - $9
  • Truly (12oz) - $7 (multiple flavors)
  • Copa Wine (6.3oz) - $7

LOOK: Best Beers From Every State

To find the best beer in each state and Washington D.C., Stacker analyzed January 2020 data from BeerAdvocate, a website that gathers user scores for beer in real-time. BeerAdvocate makes its determinations by compiling consumer ratings for all 50 states and Washington D.C. and applying a weighted rank to each. The weighted rank pulls the beer toward the list's average based on the number of ratings it has and aims to allow lesser-known beers to increase in rank. Only beers with at least 10 rankings to be considered; we took it a step further to only include beers with at least 100 user rankings in our gallery. Keep reading to find out what the best beer is in each of the 50 states and Washington D.C.
