You may or may not have noticed that they don't have "Q" in them either.   What's the reason for the missing vowels in license plates?

Vowels may create words, but in Texas, certain words are not allowed on license plates. This is part of the state's effort to keep plates appropriate and respectful. The history of Texas license plates dates back to 1917 when the first state-issued plate was introduced. Initially, Texas license plates featured six-character alphanumeric patterns.

However, as the population grew and all six-character combinations were exhausted, Texas updated its design in 2009. The new general-issue plates expanded to seven characters, beginning with two letters, followed by a number, then another letter, and ending with three numbers. This change allowed for millions of new combinations while maintaining the unique identity of Texas plates.

Wait? Some Texas License Plates Have Vowels

That’s correct, personalized license plates in Texas can include vowels, but strict rules govern what can and cannot appear on them. Many words and phrases are banned to ensure that plates remain appropriate and do not include offensive, obscene, or otherwise unsuitable content. These regulations help maintain a standard of decency while still allowing drivers to express themselves creatively within the guidelines.

Trucks are also issued license plates that can include vowels.  However, passenger cars do not have them unless they are personalized plates.
