One of the best places to go and swim in the summer is in Canyon, on the WTAMU campus, but that is about to change. Soon, families will have to find an alternate place to swim for the rest of the summer.

The Virgil Hensen Activity Center pool on the WTAMU campus will be closing down temporarily for new updates and upgrades. The pool will be closed on Friday, July 31, and will remain closed through August 30. For many families, this means the end of summer swimming, but for those returning to campus, the pool will be open soon after the semester starts.

WTAMU is not shutting down the pool because of damage or an emergency, but for scheduled improvements. Those improvements make it necessary to drain the pool.

What's Being Upgraded Inside the Pool Area?

WT is closing down the pool in order to repair the concrete, remove rust from the slide and stairs. They will also be installing a new sanitization system and completing other maintenance work that can be done with the pool being empty. The repairs will cost about $37,600.

The Pool Isn't Just for Students

WT faculty, staff, and students are not the only ones who use the pool. The pool is open to the public for a fee. In fact, residents from Canyon and Amarillo can purchase memberships for the WT pool.
