Kiwis are being recalled in Texas.

The David Oppenheimer and Company I LLC has issued a recall on their Zespri brand organic green kiwifruit in the one-pound clamshell packaging.  Government testing found Listeria monocytogenes in one of the samples.

What is Listeria?

According to the Centers for Disease Control Listeria is:

<p>Listeriosis is a serious infection caused by the germ Listeria monocytogenes. People usually become ill with listeriosis after eating contaminated food. The disease primarily affects pregnant women, newborns, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. It’s rare for people in other groups to get sick with Listeria infection.</p><p>Listeriosis is usually a mild illness for pregnant women, but it causes severe disease in the fetus or newborn baby. Some people with Listeria infections, most commonly adults 65 years and older and people with weakened immune systems, develop severe infections of the bloodstream (causing sepsis) or brain (causing meningitis or encephalitis). Listeria infections can sometimes affect other parts of the body, including bones, joints, and sites in the chest and abdomen.</p>

This particular fruit was grown in New Zealand and exported to the US.  The Zespri Kiwis in the one-pound clamshell packaging has the UPC code 8 18849 02009 3, containing fruit stickered with the GTIN bar code 9400 9552.

The kiwis in the recall were shipped between June 14, 2023 and July 7, 2023 they are sold in retail locations in, FL, GA, IL, IN, KY, MI, NC, NY, OH, PA, TN, TX, VA and WI.

According to the Food Safety News, no illnesses have been reported to date.
