Review: Amarillo’s Senor Chubby’s Mexican Bar & Grill
Senor Chubby's Mexican Bar and Grill. They are now open in Wellington Square. They were pretty quiet about their grand opening. I even tried to message them asking when it was going to happen. Then on a random Tuesday this week, I saw the announcement that they were open.
There was not a lot of building up and excitement like there has been for Roll Em Up Taquito and they both ended up opening up at about the same time. I have been excited for Senor Chubby's to open because it is moving into a great location.
Before it was Senor Chubby's it was Leal's. Before Leal's, it was our beloved Gardski's. So they have some big shoes to fill. We decided to give them a try on Wednesday.
The parking lot was pretty full when we pulled up at around 1:30 pm. So I expected the restaurant to be pretty full even though it was not peak lunchtime. It was not. There were about 4 tables having lunch.
We got our table. There was a little confusion trying to find my granddaughter a high chair. I get it. They are working out all the bugs. Our server, Rocio, was great. She was still learning the menu but so was everyone. She did a great job. Very personable. She even got my granddaughter's quesadilla out right away. That is always great so she can eat right away.
Oh, and the quesadilla was great. We all snuck a bite. It was very cheesy. We were even worried that Laila might choke on too much cheese. It was great and a very big dish for a kid's meal.
Senor Chubby's doesn't have their liquor license yet. So a heads up. They are working on it. Usually when that happens they will give free beer or margarita's. Senor Chubby's did do that but you had to order a certain dish to get a free margarita. I lucked out because what I wanted did come with one. So score.
I got the fajita burrito supreme and a frozen margarita. The burrito was huge. It took up the whole plate. I did though finish it all. I am a professional. The margarita was good. I finished it all too. Again, professional.
I do judge a restaurant by their hot sauce. Or I guess I will say their salsa. Their's was really good. It was spicy so that is a win for them.
So far everything was great. I will have to also give my couple of bad takes on the restaurant. My daughter ordered shrimp fajitas and when they came out she got six pieces of shrimp. The fajitas only came with two tortillas too. So they knew it was only enough food for two fajitas. So I thought maybe it was a lunchtime portion. OK, that makes sense. The bill showed it was $15.99. You be the judge.
She did eat it all. But how could she not? We probably won't order that again. They have such a good menu that she will try something else.
Another complaint I would say about my visit was the interaction with the managers. I worked at this location when it was Gardski's. I visited it several times when it was Leal's. I am used to having Victor Leal walk up to the table asking us about our experience.
During a grand opening that is very important. Not one came up to our table to greet us at all. There were several walking around. They even went and sat at a table to have a meeting at one point. They were there. They were not busy so they should take every opportunity to hear from those that are there.
My daughter noticed that they talked to other tables. Never us. I was surprised she noticed that. If there are four tables maybe at some point acknowledge all of us. Customer service is big and leaves a lasting impression.
Senor Chubby's is open. I will be back. I will find my favorite dish and I look forward to that. Everything we ate was wonderful and I am happy to have them in my neighborhood.
