This becomes a debate each and every year. I can't tell you how many plants get ruined just because we have no patience. When is it safe to start planting in Amarillo?

I mean this is a valid question. We can have spring-like temperatures in February. We know it is not going to last. We can get snow in May. We have lived here. We know these are the cold hard facts.

I have always heard two cold hard tests to ensure we don't lose any precious vegetable plants or lilac bushes. I have always been told to wait until Mother's Day to plant. OK, but that is still a few weeks away.

Is there any other way to know we are ready? It's also a fact here in the Texas Panhandle to wait until you see the mesquite start to bloom. I will say that I don't have much Mesquite near my home but I have seen posts that they are blooming.

So can we officially go crazy? Can we officially start planting any plants that we have? I mean it is not Mother's Day yet. I seem to still be gun shy and wait. Just because I have lost plants in the past.

I saw more good news when I was scrolling through social media.

I even messaged my friend Stephen. See, I trust him when he gives weather-related stuff like this. He is retired from US National Weather Service here in Amarillo. He knows Amarillo weather. He assured me that it is safe to plant in the Amarillo area.

We don't have to wait more than two weeks for Mother's Day. We can officially get outside and do some planting. Amarillo has seen some crazy weather but we are officially safe this year.
