What It Is Like To Visit A Bonsai Tree Stand In Amarillo
We've all seen the "road-side" stands selling Bonsai trees. They're everywhere. But have you ever stopped to see just who would sell these little trees from "Karate Kid" on the backside of the desert?
The Bonsai tree stand was parked at Wienerschnitzel on 45th and Bell. How often is it that you see Japanese living art in the parking lot of a fast food chain named for an Austrian delicacy? Two cultural worlds colliding on a Friday morning, and I was caught in the middle.
The individual working the Bonsai stand was by far the friendliest person I've met in my one year of living in Amarillo. Their laughter and happiness were infectious, and soon I was smiling and laughing while looking at the trees.
My Bonsai tree now sits on my desk, and I take it outside daily for sunlight. I water it according to instructions and keep a light mist on it. I don't know how or why, but my Bonsai brings me happiness and a tranquil feeling every time I look at it.
My editor saw me watering and caring for my Bonsai recently and announced to the office, "Hey everyone! Charlie may not care about much of anything, but he sure will water that tree!"
The Bonsai is like a dog that doesn't bite you or pee on the carpet. It needs your attention without ever being annoying about it. I love it.
