This past year has been really tough on restaurants here in Amarillo. There have been several that have closed. There have been some that temporarily closed for remodeling, which is not all that bad once they open. The stretch of being closed can cause some concerns for the employees.

There was one restaurant that had to close two different times this past year. Each time they were able to reopen. The Denny's on Georgia. They closed for the first time back in January. They were able to come back and reopen. Then they closed again more recently in July. Again they were able to reopen.

Then the news came on Wednesday that they were closed again. This time the outcome was not so good. This time it was permanent. The Denny's on Georgia is no more.

I waited to tell my daughter because we had many traditions at that location. That is where we would go on Christmas Eve after Midnight Mass. Our tradition was to tip the server nicely since they had to be working on Christmas. We also had a game we played with a flip advertisement they had on the table. We still talk about that made-up game when we visit Denny's with my daughter and granddaughter.

Denny's on Georgia is gone and luckily we do still have two others in Amarillo. We just don't have the one right down the street from our home. It is not the one that we have made all those memories at. So it is just not the same.

They also wasted no time wiping the branding off of that location. They closed on Wednesday and on Thursday they had a company there removing anything Denny's related off of the building.

If you drive down Georgia Street now it is just a building that looks like it once was a Denny's.

What is next? There is no telling. It is a great location. Maybe it will be torn down and something new will come. Maybe someone will spend the money to totally remodel the place. Only time will tell.
