The Amarillo Police Department has launched a campaign to lessen driving fatalities.

In the last five years there have been 148 traffic deaths in Amarillo.  This week the APD has launched a campaign across social media to raise awareness and hopefully lower those numbers in the future.

One focus of the effort is on motorcycle fatalities.  34 fatal wrecks happened  over the last five years.  Of those 25 were not wearing a helmet, 15 were under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and 23 were speeding.

Obviously the APD would like motorcyclists and all motorists to slow down, drive sober, and for motorcyclists, wear their helmet.

According to TXDOT a motorcyclist dies on Texas roads every day with nearly 500 riders losing their lives last year.
