End of an Era – Spencer’s Moving Out of Westgate Mall?

Amarillo is such a great town. It really is. I love that I can be sitting at my desk and I can get a Facebook message from a friend with a story idea. I was just working away when I got a message from Shane.

He was telling me that he was by Kohl's and he noticed that it looked like Spencer's has a location down by PetSmart. I thought that was odd because I was just near Kohl's on Sunday and I didn't notice it. So I decided to drive there and see for myself.

I mean Spencer's has been inside Westgate Mall for as long as I can remember. They are that store that you don't think your parents want you to go inside. You, though, know as a kid when they drop you off, you are going.

As an adult, you may not go to the mall specifically to go to Spencer's but you always end up checking it out. They have so much stuff. What is Westgate Mall going to be without Spencer's? That was my first thought.

I mean there is no way they are going to be having two locations. I mean I can't imagine us needing one in Westgate Mall and one next to Ulta. That is indeed where I saw they were moving into.

Then my next thought is good. They needed a bigger location. That Spencer's in the mall always seemed so jam-packed. I also wondered if the rent at the mall was just too much and if they were saving money moving elsewhere.

I just know that Spencer's not being inside Westgate Mall seems like a big downer. I know I spent a lot of the late eighties and early nineties browsing through Spencer's. I believe most of us have spent a lot of time there.

I reached out to the folks at Westgate Mall and they suggested I reach out to Spencers, which I did, the mall had no idea they were thinking about another location. So they didn't know if they were moving out of the mall or not. I have not heard back from Spencer's yet.

So this all seems very interesting.
