Every year around this time, the smell of Mint Juleps fills the air. Big floppy ornate hats leave their boxes in the back of the closet. Derby day is upon us.

Usually I sit in a sports bar on Derby Day, watching the spectacle on at least five different screens, listening to Hunter Thompson's "The Kentucky Derby Is Decadent and Depraved" on YouTube.

I know how odd it sounds but if you time it right, it winds up being better than Wizard of Oz set to Pink Floyd.

This year, I decided to try and find an event somewhere in town that would be our own slice of the Kentucky Derby in the heart of the Texas panhandle. That is easier said than done.

I know there are several private parties happening in town. I've been invited to a few. But when it comes to events that are open to the public, the "pickin's are slim."

There is a Derby Day event being held at the Drunken Oyster. They encourage everyone to throw on a hat and watch the race with them.

The HSCA is having their 2nd Annual Kentucky Derby Gala. I'm not sure what all happens at this gala. You will have to purchase tickets, and after the "real" derby they have a second one. Perhaps it is the mystery surrounding the gala that has me intrigued.

It's out in Hereford. If you don't mind making the trip, it might be something to at least inquire about..

This year, I may skip all of the derby themed festivities and go with some much needed family time. Plus, I don't own any floppy ornate hats and I don't look good in a dress.
