I am a sucker for a new restaurant in Amarillo. I am a sucker for seafood as well. So if you can add the two, why not? I mean no restaurant is going to survive without having customers. I am happy to help.

I get to try a meal and I get to let others know. It's a win in my book. So the new place I wanted to try is Mariscos El  Big Boy on Sixth Street. They took over the former 406 Rib Shack location. It was also the former Venezia location. Before that, it was Trail Boss. So they have seen some restaurants in that location.

We tried it over the weekend. When we walked in there were signs telling us to pick our own table. OK, that was nice. We picked a regular table as opposed to a bar-type table since we were going to need a high chair.

We went in with an appetite and knew we wanted to try a lot of stuff. We wanted to get a taste of as much seafood as possible.

We decided to get oysters. I love them and my daughter had only tried them once. I will say these oysters are huge. We got a half dozen.

I usually like horseradish on mine. These were not served with any. They may have had some if I asked. I decided to try the sauce that they served with it. I also had a ton of spicy sauces on the table to check out as well.

We did find out that my daughter wasn't such a fan of oysters so I got to eat most of them. That was a win for me. Next time I will ask if they have any horseradish. If not I will continue with some of the sauces on their table. They really did have a kick.

We wanted more appetizers to try out. We are all about seafood so bring it on. We got the shrimp cocktail next to share. It had a lot of shrimp and it was served with some saltine crackers for us to put the cocktail on. The shrimp was in a tomato sauce with tomatoes, cilantro, onion, and cucumbers. They topped it with avocado. Avocado makes everything better. It was really tasty.

I also wanted to try one of the tostadas. We chose the fish ceviche tostada. They also had shrimp and crab. I loved having the ceviche on the tostada. It gave a nice crunch to it. Again with the avocado.

We ordered my granddaughter's meal when we ordered all of our appetizers. It is just always easier if she can eat before our main meal comes out. We have learned that. We got her the cheese quesadilla. It was served with french fries. Which is like her spirit animal. Fries go with everything. The quesadilla was two big pieces so we were able to bring half of it home for a second meal.

For our meal we each chose tacos. I got the shrimp tacos and my daughter got the asada. The dish comes with four tacos and I was able to bring two tacos home for later. My daughter loved her tacos and ate them all. I ate more of the oysters and tostada than she did so I had leftovers of my shrimp tacos.

The sauce that they served with the tacos was a bit on the spicy side. So that was a win for us. I couldn't believe that this was the first time that we visited this restaurant. It is on Sixth Street so it's close to the house. We just found out about it.

My daughter said we definitely have to go back. We will just have to pick a different table. The one we chose was right under the air conditioning vent so we were cold. We will pay attention to that next time.

The food was great and the prices really were not bad at all. Especially for all the food we got. I was surprised that the oysters were only $12 for six and they were huge. When we were at a fancy restaurant in Phoenix this past summer they were close to $4 per oyster and they were tiny. So I felt really good about the ones at Mariscos El Big Boy.

We will definitely be back and try other stuff on their menu. I think my daughter will stick with the asada tacos. She really loved those.
