Red Light Cameras About To Be Obliterated From Amarillo

They're pesky. They're annoying. They cause us anxiety and panic.

And now, they're about to be gone.

What exactly am I referring to? I'm talking about those red light cameras that like to snap our picture on a bad hair day. I mean, they even like to get us when we look our best, but they'll no longer be able to catch those live-action shots of us driving.

As you may (or may not) recall, a while back I talked about how these red light cameras are technically illegal in Texas. However, they were allowed to stay in Amarillo because of clauses in the law.

Those clauses are about to expire, which means the life of the red light cameras in Amarillo is set to come to an end.

When that clock strikes midnight on August 29th, the cameras will be turned off and you no longer risk getting a ticket from an unflattering pic.

That doesn't mean you should start barreling through every red light you encounter. Studies did show that the intersections with the red light cameras did indeed have fewer accidents than the intersections without them, so they DID serve a good purpose.

All this means is the camera can't get you anymore. The police however can, and trust me, they will if they see you blow through a red light...or stroll through it like the majority of the city seems to like to do.

The camera equipment won't come down immediately, however. That will happen over the course of a 90-day period as it'll be completely phased out.
