Staycation In Amarillo? Here’s 5 Things You MUST Do

It's really easy to lose sight of the things that make your city cool when you live in it, right? I mean I do it ALL the time. We get so caught up with life and everything going on around us, that we forget Amarillo actually has some really fun and cool things to do.

There are a lot of things we'd like to go do and experience, but we always tell ourselves "I don't have the time" or "Maybe I can squeeze it in after I get all this stuff done". Well, there's really only ONE true way to do everything we've been wanting.

Staycation. That's right. Ever thought about doing a full-on staycation in Amarillo as opposed to going somewhere else?

Now if you're going to do a staycation right, it means you pack up the car just like you're going on a road trip somewhere else. Rent a place, whether it's a hotel or Airbnb, and stay there for a couple of nights. You have to forget you even live here.

Now I know you're sitting there thinking to yourself, there really isn't enough to do in Amarillo to make that a real staycation. Oh, but you'd be so wrong. Let's take a look at what a staycation in Amarillo would look like.

YOUNGBLOOD'S CAFE

When you wake up in the morning, you have to start it off right with a good breakfast, and there is no better place to do that than Youngblood's. Now, you'll want to get there early because that place packs in FAST. The doors open up at 6:30 am, so I recommend not wasting any time and getting there a few minutes before the doors even open.

PALO DURO CANYON

I know, we all know about Palo Duro Canyon, but how many times do you actually go? Remember, it's the second largest canyon in the United States, next to only the Grand Canyon. Spectacular views, walking trails that will cease to amaze you, caves, and other things for you to explore. It's a MUST if you're doing a staycation.

Once you've done the exploring, don't forget about the zipline you can fly on and really get an incredible look at the canyon. If you aren't getting on the zipline, you're missing out.

COWGIRLS AND COWBOYS IN THE WEST

While you're in the Palo Duro area, you need to get some horseback riding in. You'll probably be tired from doing all the walking around the canyon, so let the horses do the work for you. It's a completely different look and feel of the canyon, and let's be honest, who doesn't like horseback riding?

It's a 2-3 hour excursion you will go on through the canyon, but you'll get a true cowboy/cowgirl excursion by getting to eat chuck wagon meals and enjoy some cowboy entertainment.

ROUTE 66 HISTORIC DISTRICT

As you're looking to wind down from your adventures at Palo Duro Canyon, you should think about cruising along Route 66. Hop onto 6th Street and just slow roll through it. Once you find a good parking spot, take it.

There's so much to do along Route 66. From all the different specialty and boutique types of shops, down to some great bars and restaurants where you can rest your weary feet, Route 66 is something not to be missed. Not to mention the kids will love being able to recognize certain things from the movie 'Cars'

POLK STREET DOWNTOWN

Want to enjoy a little nightlife flavor? Then you need to end your evening on Polk Street. The way the street lights up at night is a sight in its own right, but you can't forget about all the things to do there.

You can hop up on the rooftop bars they have to get an overhead view of everything going on. Head into Lit Arcade Bar for a few adult beverages and throwbacks to the games you played when you wasted away during summer vacation in school. It's THE spot to be at night in Amarillo.
