Amarillo’s Beloved Restaurant Shuts Its Doors, Aims for Reopening

Restaurants come and go here in Amarillo. So when one that has been open for many many years abruptly closes it's doors there are questions. What happened? Are they closed for good? Will we ever get to have that deliciousness again?

Nothing makes a person crave a certain food or favorite dish faster than hearing the place has closed. That is what happened to Henk's BBQ.- 1508 Grand Street. The Henk family owned it and operated it since 1972.

It sold back in 2016 after a death in the family. It sold but they were still open.  Until they weren't. Recently they shut their doors without any warning. Just as recently as last week. I heard about it with a post on a restaurant review page. Is that the end of Henk's BBQ in Amarillo?

I remember being a poor college kid just starting in radio when a manager, I at least think he was a manager, at Henk's would bring me a Frito pie from work to the radio station. That was my first introduction to Henk's. Oh and my first Frito pie ever. Still has to be my favorite meal to get anywhere.

From what I am seeing is that they are working on getting it reopened. They are working to bring Henk's back to the way it was. So I will keep checking it out and keep an eye on this story. I mean Henk's has been a part of Amarillo for as far back as I can remember.

It really would be a shame if this doesn't work out. I'm keeping my fingers crossed as I am sure many in Amarillo are doing as well.
