Iconic Amarillo Drive-In Closes its Doors

The gates are closed. Our childhood is gone. The Tascosa Drive-In, the last drive-in theater standing in Amarillo is closed. They had their last showing over the weekend. That part of our life is over. Or is it?

Since the news came out late last week there has been a lot of talk. A lot of memories. A lot of people are wanting to hold on to the past. What would it take? Money. The drive-in is for sale. It has been for a while.

They first started looking for a new owner back in 2020. A pandemic was happening. The drive-in was one of those places that could still be open because everyone was in their own cars. It was still an uncertain time so it's not too surprising that no serious buyers came forward.

A lot of people talked about what a great idea it would be. The drive-in needs work but is mostly cosmetic. The important stuff is taken care of. The movies can go on. They just need someone who is serious about buying. Someone with money. Or at least investors.

It's a turnkey business. So it is ready to go next season. Oh, and they have come forward with their best price. So they are serious about wanting it to go on. They don't want to see it torn down.

No business owner wants to see all their hard work over the years end like that. So they are trying. Could we have more drive-in fun in the future? If the right buyer comes along. We really hope that they do.

Amarillo would love to have Tascosa Drive-In for years to come. We want our kids and grandkids to have the same experience we did with the drive-in. Let's make it happen.
